How many times did you say you will go to the gym the next day and end up not going for weeks? Well, don’t worry you are not alone. We’ve all been lazy to work out.

Seriously, who has the energy to exercise after a long day at work or taking care of kids?

Let’s not talk about waking up at 5 in the morning to exercise. If you read the 5 am myth article, you already know what I think of it.

I’m happy to let you know that I have been going to the gym 2-3 times per week lately. Yes, my peaceful friend! I motivated myself to workout after a full day at work, and I’m proud of it 😀

So here are my tips for YOU to be motivated to workout.

1. A schedule and commitment

I think this is the most important tip. You need to set a day and time to work out. It can be at home or at the gym but set a day and a time.

Write down on a paper:

  • What days are you going to work out?
  • Are you going to workout in the morning? In the middle of the afternoon? After work?

For me, it’s straight after work on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

Then let your friends and family know about your schedule. You can add your paper on the fridge, just message them about it, maybe convince them to join you!

Talking about your commitment around you will force you to go to the gym. And don’t be afraid to share your progress!

But don’t forget to commit to it. And this means you have to learn how to say no to hang out sometimes. It’s hard at the beginning but then your friends will be aware of your schedule and will support you!

2. A tablet

If you are exercising on a machine like an elliptical, don’t forget to bring a tablet or use your phone.

Why?

To watch your favorite show and work out without seeing the time pass.

What I recommend is to select one show that you will only watch while exercising. Because if you start watching it on your sofa you will just binge watch it in your living room, being lazy. But if you only watch it at the gym, you will have to go back to know what happens in the next episode!

Personally, I have the Galaxy Note Pro and love it. People are always surprised when they see the size of my tablet because it’s 12 inches. And that’s why I love it so much. It covers the whole screen of the elliptical 😀 I don’t only use it for that but I’m glad I have it to work out.

3. Workout Headphones

This one I had to learn by mistake. When I started to workout, I grabbed my comfortable padded headphones because if I’m going to suffer, I will suffer in comfort.

But guess what?

The headphones became quickly wet because of the sweat… It wasn’t comfy at all, and a bit distracting, to be honest.

So what type of headphones should you get?

Simple, earbuds! There are many different types but these are the most commons:

4. A Fitness Tracker

My phone tracks the number of steps and the time I am active every day. And I love it. I take walks during lunch and my afternoon breaks. I like to see how much I walked and try to exceed it the next day.

The problem is that you need to have your phone on you to be able to track your activity. And when you are working out you cannot hold your phone, you can get an armband but it’s not really comfortable.

This is why you need a fitness tracker so that your workout is added to your daily activity. They also have other benefits like tracking your sleep, let you know when you have a new message, and much more.

Here are three of the best fitness tracker. As you can see they all have different features so chose one that matches all of your needs!

5. A good Outfit

When I first started, I just wore what I had.

What a mistake, I have an H&M jogging that I love wearing on lazy Sundays. While this jogging is perfect for hanging out at home it’s not made at all for working out.

Here is what happens:

When I work out and I sweat. Normal right? but the fabric of my gray pants was not made for sweat, so I ended up with a huge darker circle on my butt. Yes. You read it right on my BUTT! And obviously, I didn’t realize until I headed to the shower.

At least it showed that I wasn’t faking it. (Let’s try to be positive on this experience)

So I decided that I won’t let that happen again and invested in good workout clothes. My two favorite brands are Adidas and Nike. They have a lot of different lines of fabric dealing with the sweat so it doesn’t show!

It’s a bit more expensive than others but it’s worth it.

Let’s say that my H&M jogging is back to be my lazy Sunday pants.

Also, now you have so many fashionable outfits for exercising. Just select something you like but is also going to make you feel comfortable.

Here is one of my workout outfits:

6. A Gym Buddy

If you can’t motivate yourself to go to the gym alone, get a gym buddy.

Find someone who also wants to work out and pick a schedule together.

Exercising with someone else forces you to actually do it because you are not going to let down your partner.

You can ask anybody, a friend, a family member, a co-worker, someone you meet at the gym. ANYBODY.

I really needed to read this Julie! I’m working on building my motivation to get back to the gym, so all advice helps! The gym I go to has a cardio theater, so you can watch a movie while working out, and the cardio machines in the main gym have screens to watch stuff on. You have to pay extra for most things, but I’ll probably bring my Kindle along or just listen to some podcasts! I just purchased some new workout pants from the company Marika (haha funny because my name is Marika!), and I am excited to try them out. I actually have a workout fanny pack from them as well. I bought it because it says “marika” on the front. Thanks for all this great info, and I’m looking forward to getting my butt back to the gym!
