What Happens When You Stop Wearing Makeup All The Time

Have you ever wondered what happens when you stop wearing makeup all the time?
If you follow me on Instagram and watch my stories, you might have noticed that I don’t always wear makeup.
Don’t get me wrong, I still put cream every day to hydrate my sensitive skin and I wear makeup when I’m going out on a date with my husband or meeting with friends.
But most of the time I don’t. Especially now that I am no longer working.
So let’s find out why you should not wear makeup every day.
1. Let your skin breathe
When you think about it, by applying makeup you are clogging your pores with silicon and toxic chemicals.
If you read the book How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are you know that French women don’t wear foundation.
I didn’t realize that my makeup habits came from where I grew up until I read that book. Honestly, I don’t know why French women don’t wear foundation, all I can say is that I have a very sensitive skin and the fewer products I put on the better.
Even if you do wear makeup every day, I would recommend avoiding foundation.
2. Love yourself
From middle school, when I started to wear makeup, to college, I could not get out of the house without makeup.
I just thought that I was not pretty without mascara to cover my blond eyelashes, and eyeliner to make my eyes look amazing. Even if it took me years to know how to apply eyeliner right and even today I am often ending up with unmatching eyes 😀
It’s like I had to hide my face to feel beautiful.
I even put makeup on to go to the gym, how ridiculous is that? Wasting time to put mascara and eyeliner to have it half removed with sweat 30 minutes later …
But since I have stopped wearing makeup every day, I love my face more and more.
I’m okay with having blond eyelashes (can you tell that it was a huge complex of mine?) and going to the grocery store without mascara.
3. Feel more confident
One thing that comes with loving yourself is confidence.
And I have to say that going outside without makeup after years of not daring makes me feel so proud of myself and so much more confident!
It’s kind of funny how you will feel more confident in wearing and not wearing makeup.
I think that in this case, learning how to live with who you are and feeling like you don’t have to be like everybody else gives you strength.
4. Be lazy
Being lazy is a way to take care of yourself.
Honestly, one of the first things that people will tell you to look beautiful on videos is to wear makeup.
But the truth is I am too lazy to put makeup on just because I will do an Instagram story.
However, I will take the time to make my face pretty when I am going to take pictures or film videos with my professional photography gear. Which is the reason I don’t do a lot of self-portraits 😉
5. Be true to yourself
I think that one of the reasons why I don’t always wear makeup on videos is because I want to show you who I really am.
Most people embellish their life online, and I am guilty of it too. This is why it’s important for me to show my flaws too.
And the more I put myself out there, the more I get used to my no makeup look and the easier it becomes.
6. Sleep 15 more minutes
In the article Find Out When You Need To Sleep we mapped our morning routine in the free calculator to know at what time we need to go to bed to have enough sleep.
I don’t know about you but my makeup routine used to take me about 15 minutes every morning, and this is not counting the time to slowly remove it in the evening so I can keep all of my eyelashes.
Think about what you could do in the morning if you simplified your makeup routine:
- a 10-minute yoga practice
- sit down to drink your coffee or tea
- sleep a little bit more
- listen to a podcast
- set your intention for the day in your journal
- meditate
- you name it!
7. Feel amazing when you wear makeup
When you wear makeup every day, you get used to it and so do the people around you.
I can tell you that my husbands notice when I am getting ready for our weekly date night. Even when I look at myself in the mirror I feel so beautiful.
I guess only wearing makeup when I am going out makes it feel special.
8. You are more beautiful than you think
Now I want you to know this: you are more beautiful than you think!
Truth is that we have a tendency to focus on all of our flaws and nobody else sees them.
It’s not that we are self-centered, it’s because magazines and society are pushing for a non-realistic beauty norm which is making us feel like crap.
We are trying to become something that cannot be achievable and hate ourselves for it. Instead of focussing on what we have, we are focussing on what we don’t have.
So today, take a notebook and pen with you, look at yourself in the mirror and write down everything that you like about your face!
And remember the more time you spend without makeup, the more comfortable and beautiful you will feel!

March 1, 2018 at 5:34 pmFeel great in your own skin starts when you accept who you are without any modifications. I went days without makeup and didn’t even care because I wanted to take a break and let me skin relax.

March 4, 2018 at 9:29 pmIn the weekends and holidays I don’t wear makeup – except for mascara. Mascara is like my must have. I do, however, wear a product called invisible zinc every day (the tinted version for your face) as its a super strong physical (as opposed to chemical) sunscreen. The last five years I’ve had major pigmentation issues on my face and this is the only thing that stops them happening.

March 16, 2018 at 7:49 pmI’m a blonde-eyelash girl, too! I used to think my eyes were my only good feature (as long as I wore lots of mascara I mean), but going without mascara more often lately has allowed me to appreciate my other features more. Sometimes I will wear only lipstick and feel very French! And, going without mascara even makes it easier to go to bed earlier and get more rest, because I don’t have to procrastinate about taking off the mascara! 🙂

April 24, 2018 at 10:47 amThis was a great post Julie. I, too, had worn makeup from junior high up until recently (currently in my 40s). In college, my boyfriend’s roommate asked me why I was putting on makeup when I was about to go workout! ..lmao So I got a chuckle when you mentioned you used to do the same. You brought up some really good points. Thanks for sharing!!☺
